Epilepsy which is also known as `Mirgi' in India is a very common condition in older children and young adults. In this disease the patient will suffer sudden seizure which could range from moderate to severe. The patient suddenly goes into seizure and can fall on the ground with stiffening of the body. The fall often results in bony injuries like fractures. If the person is on the road or driving a vehicle then such a seizure can result in a major accident. Seizures can be caused due to several factors and it is important to diagnose the cause behind any kind of seizure. Many people consider this condition a shame and avoid going to a proper doctor for its treatment. Even the patient is made to feel ashamed due to this condition. Epilepsy is not a lifelong condition and improves or gets completely cured with some years of medication. The treatment for Epilepsy may last from 4 - 15 years and generally gets cured during this time if proper treatment is taken.
Exact cause behind the occurence of Epilepsy is not known but what is known is that it has a strong genetic connection. Other physiological factors like head injury, brain infection, brain tumour, stroke etc are also known to cause epileptic seizures.
Seizures can be caused due to several reasons. However if it is suspected that the seizure is due to Epilepsy then the best diagnostic tool is an Electro Encephalogram (EEG). In this test several leads are connected to the brain and inputs are given to the patient which causes brain impulses and facial reactions. These are captured on a paper in the form of waves and its results are interpreted by Neurologists. Epilepsy Protocol on MRI has been developed which is now being used extensively to diagnose this condition.
When a seizure happens at home for the first time then the patient should be rolled onto the side so that fluids do not accumulate in the lungs. The person should be immediately taken to a hospital. In most cases the neurologist will put the person on medication after the second episode. The medicine has to be taken once every day for a significantly long period of time before the patient can be weaned off the medicine. If no seizures take place during the time of medication, this does not mean that the condition has been completely treated and the medication should not be stopped without the advise of your neurologist.
