A female is born with a reproductive system in which most important organs are uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Ovary stores the eggs and releases every month. Apart from eggs it also produces hormones called progesterone and estrogen. When the ovaries stop releasing the egg every month then it is said that female has reached menopause. In simple language menopause means stopping of menstrual cycle or periods in a female. It is natural phenomenon that happens in every woman's lifetime. In India menopause is seen between 45 to 55 years of age.
However, there are females who achieve an early or late menopause. Both of these conditions need attention of a gynaecologist to assess the reasons for such event. Menopause as such is natural but is accompanied by certain conditions. These may include hot and cold flashes, mood swings, sore breasts, dry skin etc. This is the time when a female needs support of the spouse as well as the family to understand her emotional changes and support her.

Menopause does not happen overnight. It is a slow process and has 3 stages:
Perimenopause - This is the stage where menopause symptoms starts showing up. In this stage ovaries reduce the hormonal production.
Menopause - This is marked by having no periods for complete one year. This precisely means that your ovaries have stopped releasing eggs.
Post Menopause - This is after several year when the symptoms of menopause mentioned above ease. However because of lack of estrogen there are other conditions that may come up.
In some females who have under gone hysterectomy where their ovaries have been removed or have undergone chemotherapy due to which ovaries have been affected may reach an early menopause. There might be a case where this happens before the age of 40 years, without any of the reasons mentioned earlier. This is known as premature ovarian failure or ovarian insufficiency.
Menopause is a natural process and settles down on its own but some females may face problems which may persist. They may need treatment that may include Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT), Tropical Hormonal Treatment or may need to be put on anti-depression pills.
